With a dozen different brands now offering high-horsepower tractors to Canadian producers, there’s a lot to choose from for those looking to re-power the farm fleet. But how do the tractors each of these manufacturers offer compare with each other?
In order to help make an apples-to-apples comparison of what’s out there on the market, we’ll take a look at the main features and specs built into the tractors to be found on dealership lots today, beginning at the 300 horsepower mark and up from there.
The supply chain disruptions that had significantly hampered manufacturers’ ability to fill equipment orders from customers in 2021 continued into 2022. Although there were signs of significant easing by mid year, the difficulties are far from over; and brands are still dealing with the problem. But that doesn’t seem to have hurt their balance sheets too much
For the fiscal quarter ended October 31, 2022, John Deere announced a net income of US $2.246 billion, nearly doubling the US $1.283 billion reported for the same quarter in 2021. And it projects net income for the 2023 fiscal year to land somewhere between US $8 and $8.5 billion.
Over at AGCO, by the end of September that brand saw third quarter sales hit roughly US $3.1 billion, up more than 26 per cent compared to the previous year. Third quarter revenue at CNH Industrial, parent company of Case IH and New Holland, saw a 23.9 per cent jump compared to 2021.
Ag equipment sales remained relatively strong through most of 2022, but by the end of October sales of all ag tractors in the U.S. had dipped by 14 per cent compared to 2021. Canadian sales numbers show a 6.6 per cent decline.
Despite slightly lower sales volumes, analysts are optimistic going into 2023. All indications are that ag tractor sales will remain strong.
